Tesla in New Jersey ⚓
Charge Up NJ rebate + full state sales tax exemption + utility rebates. One of the best total incentive packages in the Northeast.
NJ at a glance
Full state sales tax exemption on EV purchases — saves ~6.625% on a $40k Tesla, that's $2,650 right there. Plus Charge Up NJ adds $2,000-4,000. Plus utility rebates of $500-2,000. Total state-level support can easily exceed $7,000.
🏛️ State programs
Charge Up New Jersey
Administered by NJBPU (Board of Public Utilities). Funded annually; sometimes runs out mid-year.
- $2,000-$4,000 rebate based on EPA range
- Vehicle MSRP cap: $55,000
- No income cap
- Stack-able with federal §30D
- Applied at point of sale when dealer is enrolled (Tesla is)
Sales tax exemption (the big one)
NJ exempts zero-emission vehicles from the 6.625% sales tax entirely. This is among the most valuable EV incentives in the country — a $50k Tesla saves you $3,300+ vs an equivalent ICE.
Applies to both new and used EV purchases. Tesla automatically applies the exemption at checkout for NJ delivery addresses.
HOV / Express Lane access
- NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway have limited HOV lanes
- EVs do not currently receive special HOV access in NJ (unlike NY's Clean Pass)
Registration fees
Standard NJ vehicle registration applies. No EV-specific surcharges currently, though periodically debated.

🛣️ Charging infrastructure
Supercharger coverage
- NJ Turnpike service plazas have major Supercharger sites (Vince Lombardi, Joyce Kilmer, etc.)
- Garden State Parkway: several stations along the corridor
- I-78, I-80, I-95: strong coverage
- Shore points (Atlantic City, Cape May, Long Branch): seasonal traffic, can fill up Friday/Sunday
NJ Turnpike Express EV charging
NJTA partnered to install fast charging at every service plaza. Includes Tesla Superchargers plus CCS/CHAdeMO at most locations.
Workplace + MUD charging
NJ Make-Ready programs are aggressive. If you live in an apartment complex without charging, point management at the JCP&L or PSE&G MUD programs — installations are essentially free for the property owner.
🏠 Multi-family dwelling charging
NJ does not have a statewide "Right to Charge" law as comprehensive as California. However:
- NJ condominium law generally allows EV charger installation in deeded parking with HOA review.
- Rental properties: no state protection — landlord discretion.
- NJ Make-Ready programs are designed to make it cheap for landlords/HOAs to install, so cooperation rate is increasing.
📜 NJ-specific quirks
- Tesla service centers: Paramus, Springfield, Cherry Hill, Eatontown. Best NE Tesla coverage outside Boston.
- No self-service gas (irrelevant but funny): Common joke that NJ EV owners experience their first self-service when they Supercharge.
- Toll situation: NJ Turnpike and GSP both E-ZPass. No EV-specific discounts.
- Insurance is expensive. NJ insurance rates are among the highest nationally; Teslas particularly. Shop around.
- NJ inspection: required every 2 years for newer cars. EVs pass easily — visual + lighting check only.
- Atlantic shore traffic: Friday afternoon and Sunday evening, Supercharger demand on shore routes can be heavy. Charge before leaving.
